We all have an innate need to evolve and grow. Recognising our growth brings a sense of fulfilment. In student life, this growth happens naturally as we learn and advance academically. Similarly, in professional life, we seek development through career advancements, skill enhancement, and financial gains. But how can we continue to experience a sense of growth and evolution after retirement?

Today marks one year since I chose to take voluntary retirement from my professional life. How do I fulfil the need to feel a sense of growth and evolution? With more time on my hands, I’m playing more tennis, reading more books, spending quality time with family, and meditating more. Will these activities provide me with a sense of growth?

This is when having a clear purpose in life becomes even more crucial. The search for meaning and purpose is an inherent part of us, but the demands and busyness of professional life often suppress this deeper need.

Retirement often brings more free time, allowing us to explore various activities. These might include pursuing hobbies, travelling, playing, reading, caring for children or elderly parents, and contributing to the community. While these activities can bring pleasure and help fulfil responsibilities, they may not always provide a sense of personal growth. Without a clear purpose, life can sometimes feel stagnant, as if we’re living to die.

The question isn’t about what keeps me busy; it’s about what provides a sense of fulfilment and growth.

I feel fortunate to have spent several years exploring the purpose of my life. My journey took me through philosophy, psychology, science, and spirituality, ultimately leading me to find my answer in spirituality. Continued study and regular meditation have helped me deeply internalize this purpose. While progress toward it cannot be measured tangibly, dedicating more time to spiritual practice and learning provides a profound sense of growth. The possibilities for spiritual growth are truly limitless.

Understanding the purpose of one’s life is essential, especially before retirement. While there is only one ultimate purpose in an absolute sense, truly comprehending it requires a deeper understanding of spirituality. Until we attain that level of awareness, it is important to identify a purpose that resonates with us and feels meaningful, even if it is rooted in our physical existence. Eventually, the ultimate purpose will begin to dawn.
